Scouting in World War II

Scouting in World War II
Saturday, November 21, 2026
11:00 a.m.
Learn about the history of Scouting during World War II. Matthew Sedutto will give a talk about the overlooked role of Boy Scouts during World War II, when Scouts served in roles ranging from scrap drivers and messengers to civil defense volunteers. Mr. Sedutto is an undergraduate honors student majoring in History at Norwich University. He is also an Eagle Scout and volunteer at both the Wright Museum of World War II and the L. L. Lee Scouting Museum.
Come and learn about how scouts sold war bonds, collected scrap metal, and helped grow Victory Gardens. The talk highlights roles that New Hampshire’s Scouts played during that time, including New Hampshire’s little-known civilian messenger test, during which scouts carried messages by hand between Concord and Laconia, and how Scouts served as the official secretariat of the Bretton Woods Conference. Part of the lecture will also examine the experiences of Japanese American scouts who continued participating in scouting while confined in wartime relocation camps.
WHERE: Millyard Museum, 200 Bedford Street, Manchester
