SUMMARY:The Lost Films of Amoskeag
DESCRIPTION:The Lost Films of Amoskeag\n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday\, February 28\, 202611:00 a.m.\n \n \n \n \n \n In the fall of 1968\, redevelopment was dramatically reshaping Manchester’s Millyard.  The Manchester Historic Association considered producing a film to document the before and after.  Two brothers submitted black and white film in hopes of being chosen for the project\, which was abandoned due to a lack of funding in the 1970s.  The film sat forgotten on a shelf until last summer. \nIn June 1978\, WGBH-TV in Boston produced a half-hour program called “The Amoskeag Transcripts” based on the work of Tamara Hareven and Randolph Langenbach.  It explained what happened after the mills closed and the impact on Manchester’s population. \n On February 28th we’ll show both of “The Lost Films of Amoskeag.” \nWHERE: Millyard Museum\, 200 Bedford Street\, ManchesterCOST: Included with Regular Admission \nPlease RSVP by calling 603-622-7531 or emailing history@manchesterhistoric.org \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Note\nFor advanced registration\, please contact the Millyard Museum at (603) 622-7531\, or by mail at 200 Bedford Street\, Suite 103\, Manchester\, NH 03101. SUMMARY:Lecture: The Hareven-Langenbach Amoskeag Project
DESCRIPTION:A Revolutionary Approach to the Study of  Manchester History: The Hareven-Langenbach Amoskeag Project in the 1970s\n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday\, October 11\, 202511:00 a.m.\n \n \n \n \n \n In connection with our special exhibit “Amoskeag Revisited”\, join us at the Millyard Museum for a special talk by historian Robert B. Perreault.   \nPerreault will speak about the Amoskeag Project and the relatively new methods employed in the study of  local history during the previous century. \nAlthough traditional history featured important people\, events\, and movements\, the roots of the “new social history” dated back to the Depression-era WPA interviews with average citizens who related aspects of their everyday lives and work. \nBased at the Manchester Historic Association’s research center in the 1970s\, the Amoskeag Project relied upon the Association’s vast archival body of Amoskeag Manufacturing Company records\, and especially its approximately 75\,000 individual employee files\, in an effort to identify\, locate\, and interview former Amoskeag textile workers and company administrators as resource persons in the production of journal articles and books by Tamara Hareven and Randolph Langenbach. \nPerreault served as chief oral-history interview and research assistant to the project. \n  \nWHERE: Millyard Museum\, 200 Bedford Street\, ManchesterCOST: Included with Regular Admission \nPlease RSVP by calling 603-622-7531 or emailing history@manchesterhistoric.org \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Note\nFor advanced registration\, please contact the Millyard Museum at (603) 622-7531\, or by mail at 200 Bedford Street\, Suite 103\, Manchester\, NH 03101. SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: "Amoskeag Revisited: A Fifty-Year Retrospective"
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit Opening:“Amoskeag Revisited: A Fifty-Year Retrospective” \n \n \n \n \n \n Wednesday\, September 17\, 20255:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.\n \n \n \n \n \n The year 1975 was a turning point for Manchester’s Millyard.  The Millyard’s urban renewal project had recently been completed with the filling in of the canals and demolition of about 25% of the mill space\, and many of the businesses that came into the Millyard in the 1930s and 1940s had left\, leaving a large amount of the Millyard vacant. \nIn September 1975\, a special exhibit opened at the Currier Gallery of Art called “Amoskeag\, A Sense of Place\, A Way of Life”.  The exhibit was designed by Randolph Langenbach\, an architectural historian\, and featured historic images of the mills\, along with contemporary photographs taken by Langenbach before and during the urban renewal project.  Also featured in the exhibit were machinery and architectural components of the mill buildings that had been salvaged by Langenbach\, as well as recollections of former millworkers who told what it was like to work in the mills and live in corporation housing. \nThe exhibit was very successful\, attracting double the number of visitors to the Currier than any previous exhibit.  It also served to instill in the city and its citizens a deeper appreciation for the mills and the legacy of the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company\, as well as for the remaining mill buildings. \nIn the fifty years since the Amoskeag exhibit opened at the Currier\, Manchester has grown to have a deeper appreciation of the history of the Amoskeag mills.  This exhibit at the Millyard Museum will examine the lasting impact that the mills have had on Manchester and feature elements of the original 1975 exhibit as well as never-before-seen photographs taken by Langenbach. \n  \nWHERE: Millyard Museum\, 200 Bedford Street\, ManchesterCOST: FREE \nPlease RSVP by calling 603-622-7531 or emailing history@manchesterhistoric.org \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Note\nFor advanced registration\, please contact the Millyard Museum at (603) 622-7531\, or by mail at 200 Bedford Street\, Suite 103\, Manchester\, NH 03101. SUMMARY:All Aboard for Pine Island Park!
DESCRIPTION:All Aboard for Pine Island Park! \n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday\, March 15\, 202511:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.Millyard Museum\n \n \n \n \n \n For 60 years Manchester had its own Coney Island\, Freedomland and Old Orchard Beach all rolled into one.  On Saturday\, March 15\, 2025\, at 11:00 a.m.\, you’re invited to revisit the glory days of Pine Island Park.  Manchester Historic Association Trustee and Past President Ed Brouder will give an illustrated presentation at the Millyard Museum. \nLocated on Pine Island Pond\, just off Brown Avenue\, the park was a clever way to attract more business to J. Brodie Smith’s electric trolley line in 1902.  Pine Island offered everything fun – swimming\, canoeing\, dancing\, roller skating\, musical entertainment\, amusement rides\, refreshments\, and even a theatre.  It started to feel a little\, pinched for space when the City of Manchester built an airport next door and the Army Air Corps expanded it during World War II.  The 1938 hurricane damaged the famous roller coaster – and a fire did serious damage in 1961 – but it was changing times and changing tastes that doomed the park.  Pine Island’s last day was September 3\,1962. \nFree with Museum Admission.  Please RSVP by calling (603) 622-7531 or email history@manchesterhistoric.org \n \n \n \n \n \n Thank you to the Airport Diner\, part of The Common Man Family in New Hampshire\, for sponsoring this presentation! \nwww.thecmanroadside.com  \nLike! www.facebook.com/thecommonmannh   \nFollow! @thecommonmannh

DESCRIPTION:The Amoskeag Ledge\nSaturday\, January 18\, 202511:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.Millyard Museum\n \n \n \n \n \n In the 1870s and 1880s\, a flourishing Manchester required tons of granite for mill foundations and street curbing.  It came from what was known as the Amoskeag Ledge\, near Derryfield Park.  When underground springs filled in the granite quarry\, the Ledge became a popular swimming attraction.  A group of year-round outdoor swimmers – The Brownies – put on public exhibitions four times a year\, drawing thousands of spectators even in freezing cold weather.  The City took steps to close the Ledge many times and about a dozen people are known to have drowned there.  But a prominent neighbor\, Nora (Kennard) Jones prevented that from happening because half of the quarry was on her property! \nOn Saturday\, January 18\, 2025 at 11:00 a.m.\, MHA Trustee and Past President Ed Brouder will present an illustrated talk about the Ledge at the Millyard Museum. \nFree with Museum Admission.  Please RSVP by calling (603) 622-7531 or email history@manchesterhistoric.org \nWe are grateful to Ashland Street Preservation Group of Manchester for sponsoring this event in the MHA Lecture Series.

SUMMARY:Grace Metalious Centennial
DESCRIPTION:Grace Metalious Centennial & Lecture: Before Peyton Place by Robert B. Perreault\n \n \n \n \n \n Saturday\, September 7\, 202411:00 a.m. \n \n \n \n \n \n Join us at the Millyard Museum as we commemorate the 100th birthday of Grace Metalious\, the author of the best-selling and controversial novel Peyton Place.  Grace  Metalious was born Marie Grace DeRepentigny on September 8\, 1924 in Manchester. Perreault will give a talk entitled “Before Peyton Place: In Search of the Real Grace Metalious” about her life and formative years in Manchester. \nToday\, both Peyton Place and Grace Metalious remain largely unknown among generations born after her death in 1964 at the age of 39. Metalious also wrote other novels\, including No Adam in Eden. Her most autobiographical work of fiction\, the novel is set in fictional “Livingstone\, New Hampshire\,” but based on Manchester. \nPerreault’s talk looks at the author’s life and impact she has had\, using No Adam in Eden and Metalious’ autobiographical article “About Me and Peyton Place\,” in conjunction with his own interviews with members of Metalious’ family. \nCOST: included with regular admission \nPre-registration is requested.
